Jens Marquardt was a Visiting Research Fellow at the Harvard STS Program during the 2017-2018 academic year. He is a Post-Doctoral Researcher at the University of Halle-Wittenberg and associated with the Environmental Policy Research Centre in Berlin. While at Harvard, Jens investigated the links between power, governance structures and complex socio-technical change in order to facilitate environmental policy implementation within complex governance arrangements. Jens holds an MA in Political Science and received his PhD in 2015. He studied political science, communications and economics and holds a diploma in Journalism. In his doctoral research, Jens explored how power and multi-level governance structures affect environmental policy implementation and renewable energy development in Southeast Asia. His work unveils the challenges for dealing with environmental innovations at different administrative levels. Environmental politics, sustainable development and green innovations are Jens’ main research interests which he investigates from multiple angles. He is particularly interested in the links between social sciences and environmental technologies, the role of power and coordination and sustainability transitions. Jens was previously employed at the Centre for Sustainability Management in Lüneburg and acquired extensive knowledge in public relations and online communication. He worked for a German member of parliament, conducted research for the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies in Potsdam and completed a traineeship at the German development cooperation agency GIZ. Jens conducts workshops and seminars on various issues related to sustainable development. In his current project, Jens studies how power structures, resources and capacities affect environmental governance particularly in developing countries.
